This is my work so far. The construction of the box (80x80x80cm) itself is done. I’ll add some eye-candy (color, lights, etc.) later on. The plexiglas is 10mm thick and completely transparent. Right now I’m waiting for the “lee density frost” diffuser surface, wich will be mounted beneath the plexiglas as a projection surface (and to spread the IR evenly).
I soldered the IR leds to a circuit board and hooked them to a pc power supply (12V). The tracking device is a Sony DCR TRV digital 8 camcorder with nightshot. It’s connected through firewire and will get a wide-angle (0.4x) and just to make sure an IR filter. Its DV resolution and the high FPS will give me some good results in the tracking.
The beamer uses a wide-angle lens, too… but probably still needs to be aligned with a mirror to get the proper image size on top.

WHAT I AM DOING NOW: Testing different frameworks (reacTIVision, CCV, touchlib) to get the best results in blobdetection. Building stands for the IR spots, camera, beamer etc… setup hardware.

Here is my latest project.
We were supposed to develop a block in the city of Jena.
After careful analysis of the city’s structure we came up with this approach.

The full documentation can be found here:
(The website was used to present our concept)

No, I did NOT design this page but I programmed it.
It’s all clean html, css and a little javascript.

Check it out!

Dirk Schwittlich and I came up with this idea for an analytical mockup of Jena (Germany).
It’s a physical mockup made out of Styrodur showing the historical change of the city’s structure, layer by layer.
Additionally we light up certain areas of the mockup following a timeline, giving the audience a grasp on how the city changed over the last century.
Along with that, pictures and videos are displayed next to the mockup, each corresponding to historic events that provoked these changes.

We were able to overcome certain shortages of the architectural mockup by adding a new dimension, the time. Creating a unique dynamic visual experience without making the mockup unreadable when the animation is not present.

This was the second attempt with more to follow. Thoughts for the future are:
Adding a user interface, so the audience decides what information they want to display.
Being able to display elevations, etc. on top of the mockup houses.
Using more than one beamer to display information on the vertical faces of the mockup.

mini projects
